Prove how essential you are through hard work and a great attitude, and get a raise too!

It’s only natural to expect your boss to notice all of your hard work. You’ve been meeting goals, exceeding expectations, and you’re loyal. In a perfect world they would always notice these things, and see how important you are to the business. Heck, they should probably even give you a raise without having to ask for it. Alas, it’s not a perfect world and sometimes those in charge are so overwhelmed with responsibilities that your accomplishments are not given the attention they deserve.

We also find ourselves living in a world where some businesses are cutting back on their workforce, keeping only those who are most beneficial to the business. While that may sound harsh, it’s also the truth of how things often go in the world of business. But don’t be disheartened. Now more than ever, businesses need people they can count on, people they know will perform at higher levels and keep the company moving forward. That person can be you. In fact, you’re probably that person already, but by focusing on the tips below, you can better position yourself as essential and worthy of a higher salary.

Even in these challenging times, it’s possible for you to be paid more money. Sometimes, just the thought of asking for a raise sends shivers down the spine of even the most deserving employees. If that sounds like you, I’ve put together some tips that will help better position you for the raise you know you deserve. Put these tips into action, and it’s possible you may not have to ask after all!

 Positive Attitude

It’s a fact that employers favor those who come to work each day with an enthusiastic and positive attitude. Of course, being good at your job is still important, but when your both positive and good at your job you’re in a prime position to be more valued. There’ll always be those who complain and exhibit negativity every day, just be sure that’s not you!

Have a Conversation With Your Manager

Communication is the key, and little happens without it. If you’ve been on the job for a while, ask your manager for a one-on-one meeting to discuss goals. Express to them your desire to excel and grow within the company. This lets them know that you care about the goals of the company as well as your own. Then ask for their advice or feedback on how you can improve in your current position, and prepare yourself to take on a more advanced role in the future. Implement their recommendations and you’ll be seen as a person who is coachable and gets things done. Even if you do have to ask for a raise later, you’ll already be in the best position possible to receive one.

Take On More Responsibility Without Being Asked

Many people shudder at the very thought of doing more than they’re paid to do. However, this is one of the most effective tips I can give you. If you want to expand beyond your current role, you must outgrow the position you’re in now. Begin by mastering the tasks assigned to your current position. Once you’re doing them well, start looking for and solving problems that you’d be dealing with in your next role. It’s important to continue performing well in your current role as you eye your next one. Ask questions, ensure you’re aligned with the company’s goals and strategies, and be a problem-solver. If you implement this one tip, your value to the company will be impossible to ignore, and they will do whatever it takes to keep you on board.

 Be Proactive

Another effective tactic involves communicating your accomplishments to your manager, but rather than saving them all up for one conversation, communicate them in real time. It’s okay to toot your own horn sometimes, just do it from a place of humility and genuine enthusiasm. Just go about your business every day, perform your role well, exceed expectations, and when you have a win share it with your manager. Doing so will make them happy, and your enthusiasm will be contagious. If you do this consistently, when the time comes for your manager to promote someone, you’ll be at the top of the list.

Believe You Deserve It

This just might be the most important tip of all. If you think your commitment to excellence deserves to be compensated, and you desire for others to see your value, the first person you must convince is yourself. Many people know they’re great at their job, but are unsure if they deserve a raise. The reality is this: If you’re excelling in your role, have taken on more responsibility and are excelling at that as well, and you’re doing all of that with a great attitude, your value will be impossible to ignore!
